2012 Best Places to Work in Kentucky Rankings Announced

Genentech and MassMutual Financial Group take top honors

FRANKFORT, Ky. (April 20, 2012) – MassMutual Financial Group: Assurance Financial Group and Genentech, Inc. were ranked the 2012 best places to work in Kentucky by the Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management (KYSHRM) and the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce.

During the Eighth Annual Best Places to Work in Kentucky awards ceremony, presented by Fisher & Phillips LLP, nearly 1000 attendees joined in celebrating Genentech, MassMutual and 63 other Kentucky companies who were recognized for their commitment to encouraging companies in the Commonwealth to focus measure and move their workplace environments toward excellence.

Winners were selected from two categories – small/medium companies with 25-249 U.S. employees and large companies with 250 or more U.S. employees. The selection process is based on an assessment of the company’s employee policies and procedures and the results of an internal employee survey, administrated by Best Companies Group.

MassMututal Financial Group: Assurance Financial Group, the number one small/medium company, has offices in Lexington, Louisville and Owensboro and serves local residents and businesses by helping secure their financial futures. This is the second year MassMutual has been named to the Best Places to Work in Kentucky list.

“Communication is the lifeblood of our company. I often tell our employees that you can never over communicate,” said Kevin Collins, president of MassMutual.

Genentech, Inc., the winner of the large company category, is located in Louisville and is considered the founder of the biotechnology industry. This is the second year that Genentech has been named to the list; last year they were also the number one company in the large category.

“At Genentech, we challenge our employees to create the kind of company where we set high goals, strive mightily to achieve them and build a culture where people are respected as individuals”, said Jeff Uligian, a director at Genentech.

The Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management (KYSHRM) state council and the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce are proud to host the Best Places initiative, as both organizations support the value of workplace excellence as a key component in moving Kentucky forward.

“As human resource professionals, we lead our organizations and contribute to the effective strategies that impact the bottom line,” said KYSHRM Chair, Cathy Fyock, CSP, SPHR.

According to Kentucky Chamber President and CEO, Dave Adkisson, “in order to make Kentucky’s economy thrive, we must be able not only to educate and employ Kentuckians here, but we also must entice those from out-of-state to work here. The Best Places program does just that.”
